Types of Writing Contests
There are three main types of writing contests for kids, or indeed for anyone. They are poetry contests, essay contests and fiction/non-fiction contests (or for lack of a better term, story contests). The way to choose which one is the most suitable for you is easy. When you think about writing, what do you see yourself doing? Do you immediately think of stories to tell, or do you wish to give an opinionated discussion on a topic, or are very creative in nature and wish to express yourself poetically? Some people are fortunate enough to be gifted in all types of writing and could easily enter any writing contest for kids, but for those who are not it is important to find out what types suit you best before entering a writing contest.

The first type of writing contest is a poetry contest. Some people would believe this is the easiest type of writing contest simply because it generally means there will be the least amount of writing. But there are things to consider, such as what type of poem? There are poems that rhyme and ones that do not, there are limericks, haikus, etc. Unless you have a good understanding of a poem's structure, winning a poetry writing contest may not be achievable.
Essay contests are easy for anyone to enter. The first paragraph will introduce the topic to be discussed, and will give a thesis sentence that will clearly guide the reader which side of the topic you are going |
to argue. Think of it as a debate on paper. For example, if you were to write an essay on what type of animal makes the best house pet, you might state "I think cats are the best type of house pet because they are small, loving and are very smart." Then you proceed to back up each of those three points (small, loving, smart) in upcoming paragaraphs.
The last type of essay contest is writing a story, whether fictional or non-fictional. For some people, this poses a challenge because while they may be a terrific writer from a technical standpoint, they may lack imagination which is crucial to this type of writing contest. A good way to get an imagination flowing is practice. Find a friend to make up stories with. Ask the friend to give you the first sentence, and then orally tell a story from their. The friend can take over in the middle and then it is their turn to complete the tale. You may also like...
