Types of Writing Contests

Winning a cooking contest may be easier than winning any other type of contest, because they generally have fewer people entering.  Creating an original recipe may take some people more time than writing an essay for a contest, for example.  Therefore, entering a cooking contest may be a good place to start as a novice contest entrant.

So how does one win a cooking contest?  First, as with any contest, read the guidelines carefully.  Are there a specific number of ingredients?  Are there certain ingredients that must be used, such as the contest sponsor's product?  These must be taken into consideration before recipe creation and planning can begin.

Next, evaluate the recipe you have in mind.  Is it completely original?  This is very important.  Cooking contests are generally looking for something new and inventive.  Search the internet to see if there is anything out there that is very similar to what you intend to cook.

Don't settle for your first attempt just to whip up something quickly and submit it with the hope of winning.  Make several versions.  Ask family and friends to sample the dish and ask for any suggestions, such as how the seasoning could be changed a little to improve the taste.  Remember that if friends and family don't care for the dish, then the judges won't either.

Is the dish fairly easy to make?  A dish that is too complicated, especially if it is for a cooking contest for kids, may be disqualified by the judges because they could suspect that perhaps an adult actually did the work.  Keep it simple.

Also, whatever dish you make, make it look beautiful.  Before a person takes a bite from a meal, the more visually appealing it is, the more the person will want to eat it.  This is important for your cooking contest, especially if you have to submit a photo of the finished dish along with the recipe itself.

Lastly, have fun creating cooking contest entries.  If you aren't having fun with the cooking contest, consider trying a different type of contest instead.
