How Do I Become A Model?
Modeling contests are a great way to start modeling immediately. Take famous model Heidi Klum, for example. In 1992, eighteen year old Heidi and her best friend entered a modeling contest in her home country, Germany. They mailed in polaroid pictures of themselves, and she was declared the winner. The prize was a three year, $300,000 modeling contract and the title of Ms. Model 1992. For Heidi Klum, the modeling contest was life changing. Other famous models who got their start from winning a model competition include Alessandra Ambrosio, Linda Evangelista, and Adriana Lima.
Many major companies who are well known household names sponsor modeling competitions for young people; some of these are annual competitions as it is good marketing for the company and it brings |

|
fresh faces for their brand. These companies have included such names as The Gap (Baby Gap), Parent's Magazine, The Children's Place, Seventeen Magazine, Teen Vogue, Guess Girl, and many more.
Teens who are eighteen and up are able to enter even more modeling contests since some may not be open to younger people. Good modeling contests to enter are always ones that are from well know agencies, since they are the most likely to be legitimate, the most likely to provide modeling work, and they are the most likely to offer the largest paying contracts. Search for contests such as Elite Model Look, Supermodel of the World (by Ford Modeling Agency) and if you are comfortable with the idea of being on television, try entering America's Next Top Model. Another way to break into modeling is to simply find a reputable agency. There are local modeling and talent agencies in nearly every metropolitan area, but of course the bulk of modeling jobs in America |
are in New York City and Los Angeles. For kids who want to break into modeling, parents would need to contact the agency and submit photos (usually a facial close up and a full body shot) or anything else required by the agency for review.
Lastly, modeling classes can be a good way to start but they aren't usually necessary. The problem with modeling schools is that they charge for lessons, and they do not always provide any modeling employment experience. Still, for some aspiring models it can be a good place to start to give confidence and coaching. |
