Publishing for Kids:  Magazines That Publish Children's Writings and Artwork

Are you a kid who dreams of being a published author, or who wants to see your artwork get published?  A great way to start is to try to get published in a magazine for kids.  All of the magazines below will publish kids' writings or artwork, but only some of them pay.  However, being published at all is a great honor as it is highly competitive, especially for well known kids magazines such as Highlights.  Be sure to read the submission guidelines for each magazine to see exactly what they are looking for.  If you haven't ever heard of the magazine, ask your local library if they have any copies of whatever magazine you want to submit to.  Then read some of the articles, poetry, or stories to see examples of what the magazine likes to publish.  Good luck!

Magazines that Publish Children's Art and Writings:

Stone Soup Magazine:  Those ages 13 and under can submit stories or illustrations to this children's magazine.  For accepted submissions, Stone Soup pays $40 per story, and $25 per illustration.

Highlights Magazine:  Although Highlights Magazine does not pay for any submissions, it is a great way for a kid (or adult!) to get published.  HM welcomes stories (less than 200 words), poems (less than 75 words), jokes, tongue twisters, book reviews, etc.

Creative Kids Magazine:  Another kids' magazine that accepts submission from kids, but does not pay for them.  Kids ages 8 -16 may submit photographs, songs, stories, games, poetry, plays or anything else creative that can be published in the magazine.  Kids whose work is accepted will receive a free copy of that month's magazine.

Magic Dragon:  This quarterly published children's magazine is intended for elementary aged children.  It does not pay for submissions, but does accept both writings and illustrations to be considered for publication.  If your work is published, Magic Dragon will mail you a free copy of the magazine.

Skipping Stones:  This children's magazine is "a nonprofit magazine for youth that encourages communication, cooperation, creativity and celebration of cultural and environmental richness."
Artwork and original writings are accepted from anyone of any age living anywhere.

Teen Ink Magazine:  If you are between the ages of 13-19, you can submit original writings, art work or photography to be featured in the magazine. No payment is awarded, but if your work is selected to be in the magazine, you do receive a free copy of the magazine.
