Should I pay to enter a contest?
|
Whether or not you feel comfortable entering a contest with a fee is up to you. Most contests for kids do not charge an entry fee. Most of the ones that do are writing contests, and usually this is labeled as a "reading fee". In general, if a contest requires a fee for entry, it is probably to offset the costs of running a website, as well as to possibly fund the cash prize, if there is one.
In order to determine if you should pay an entry fee for a contest, try to compare the cost of the fee versus the amount of the prize. If the fee is five dollars, for example, but the first prize is $500, the the five dollars is only one percent of the prize money. This doesn't sound too unfair. As a general rule, an entry fee for a kids' contest of any kind shouldn't be more than $15, and even that is high. Again, most kids' contests won't charge any fee. Don't feel obligated to enter any contest that does charge a fee. There are many, many contests for kids that do not ask for any entry fees at all.
