How do I know if a modeling agency is legitimate?

Finding a reputable modeling agency is a must for aspiring models.  Models living in New York City or Los Angeles most likely won't have trouble finding a reputable agency, but what about models looking for work in smaller cities?  Here is how to find a modeling agency that will do what they promise.

First, ask around.  Do you know anyone who is currently successfully modeling?  Ask them who there agency is.  Also ask if they have worked with any other agencies locally, and what was that experience like?  Are they getting regular, steady paid modeling jobs?  If you don't know anyone who is modeling, do a google search for agencies in your area.  Then go to a website that specializes in reviews, such

as Yelp.com to hear what other people are saying about the agency.  Then, check the Better Business Bureau website and search for the agency.  The business should also be listed with the BBB and it should be in good standing.  If you cannot find modeling agencies in your area, also search for "talent agencies".  Sometimes smaller agencies will market themselves this way.

The next thing to question is whether or not the agency is charging you fees.  A real, reputable modeling agency will NEVER charge a model anything. Modeling agencies get paid in the following way:  a client will hire the modeling agency for a job, such as finding them models for a commercial they are making for television.  When the job
is completed, the client will pay the modeling agency, and the modeling agency will in turn pay a portion of that money to the model.
If you sign on with an agency and they don't pay you on time or as much as promised, then they are not reputable.  These are things you should look for when searching for reviews as outlined in the first step.  The bottom line is do as much research as you can.  Find a modeling agency that has been in business for several years and is not likely to go out of business soon, and don't sign a lengthy contract with anyone that you are not absolutely sure you'd like to work with.
